UMR Virology

The laboratory's activities are focused on animal virus diseases responsible for epizootics or zoonotic and/or emerging risks that are a threat to food safety and human and animal health (example: hepatitis E).

Research

Characterizing viral diversity, inter-species viral transmission, viral pathogenesis, virus-host interactions and virus-induced immune responses and notably risk evaluation and decision-making by the authorities.

Develop new diagnostic methods optimized for the epidemiological surveillance and phylogeny.

Develop new vaccination strategies for an improved biological security (an attenuation of virus targets) and efficacy (distinction of infected animals from vaccinated ones, administration via parenteral or mucosal routes).

The UMR also houses international reference laboratories (OIE reference laboratory for epizootic haemorrhagic disease and foot and mouth disease), European (EU reference laboratory for equine diseases) or national (national reference laboratory for bluetongue, foot and mouth disease, vesicular stomatitis, swine vesicular disease, African horse sickness, and West Nile fever).
